CHARACTER
Character Name: Her Imperial Condescension/Condesce
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: Most recent updates - ruling from the Alpha session, attempting to hunt down the Alpha kids.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: The Condescension is not as concerned with the Beta session that John is from. The Alpha session is more her slice of pie. Likewise, John's only association with 'the Batterwitch' is Betty Crocker, a faceless brand of cooking mix and foods. He is only vaguely aware of a troll being the 'big bad' of the Alpha session, not enough to be concerned, make the connection, or feel the need to interact with the Condescension. She herself would be too busy interacting with other players to feel the need and go out of her way to interact with one insignificant human.
Personality: 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely' - a term, old as time, that seems to suffice as a perfect summary. In a feudal society, the one who sits at the top is not viewed with sympathy, creating themselves into a monster of sorts, believing themselves full entitlement to those below them, and justification of what they do. In the case of the Condescension, the use of the word 'monster' becomes almost literal, a Queen of the Feral, of the Trolls, a hardly humane species, relying on blood and battle to hold up their entire way of life. And she stands as the concrete pillar to hold it up, her use of fear and threats to keep those below her in line, for the sake of keeping a throne that, for all her intents, she could covet until the end of time. She is described in terms as the 'psychotic genocidal', and there is no reason to question it - until you wonder what sort of society this is to birth such a creation. Is her environment to blame? Or can she truly be so inherently, naturally cold and irredeemably cruel?
In the way that the Hemospectrum works, The Condescension's position at the top of it results in a higher bloodlust than others. While this doesn't always deem true - case en point, Feferi - The Condesce is practically the poster child of this particular bit of Alternian culture, though not in the directly homocidal nature of examples such as the Grand Highblood, nor to an uncontrollable manner as the younger trolls may have as they learn to deal with it. Her bloodlust instead seems to channel into her empirical expansion. Due to fears of rebellion, The Condesce scatters the adults of her planet to the skies. Her armies are used to follow up her ship. She herself visits the planets first, bringing forth a diplomatic greeting, then leaving the planet to it's destruction at the hand of her armies. It's a matter of leaving the action to others. The Condescension acts through others. She operates as the center of command, and that seems to sate her. It speaks for her ego, that she have these certain needs, but is content on expressing them through others rather than herself.
It can also be viewed also as a sense of entitlement - she makes no distinction between the efforts of herself, and those below her, viewing it all as her credit and accomplishments. This is particularly present with her relationship with The Psiioniic. The relationship described as enamored, but her actions act more like a showcase, as her pilot, her strength, her pride. Those of her Empire are merely extensions of her power and abilities. There is little concern for them otherwise. As far as the Condesce is concerned, she works alone. And while some part of this is the forementioned entitlement and credit, another part is actually very true. There's a difference between what she does and actually working with someone. The difference here is trust. The Condesce's sense of trust is far below that of most other trolls. She cannot trust her Descendent, not unless she is willing to give up the throne. And she cannot trust her armies, unless she is willing to succumb to their numbers. Better to give off appearances of control, than let them believe their actions have any sway over her.
But just as high-built as her pride is, so too are her fears deeply rooted. A position as a Highblood builds both a great power, and a greater rarity. As Doc Scratch mentions, Lowbloods are born in greater numbers than their tyrants, and this in itself was the biggest advantage with the Summoner's rebellions. The Condesce has her ways of controlling it; scattering them, as well as an ever-hanging threat of her Lusus, and it's genocidal capabilities, at her command. Thus, one would think she has everything under control. And yet, she retreats and lashed out at any sign of threat to her supposedly impeccable control. She lashes out heavily to the Signless' messages of unity, despite his complete lacking threat of violence. Later, when entering the B2 session, she shows a similar pattern in her disgust of all that is different from what she knows, from reproduction to methods of child-rearing. This broadcasts her fears from the understandable to the irrationally panicked. Because it is obvious that she fears her people, and the power they could have in unity, against her well-being. But what she seems to fear much more is change. They could attack her and only wound her pride, but what would terrify her most is is if they were to attack the hierarchy, the hemospectrum - everything that she feels strength in, everything that she knows as familiar. She fears revolution, violent or otherwise, because she does not wish to abandon what she has. She fears unity, even for her own benefit, because it requires trusting people to manipulate and change her life.
But, even with fear, it is not enough to justify her killings, her control. So, can we still safely say that she would deserve any form of punishment? Is her personality still that simply cut-and-pasted? There's still another factor to consider.
With Act 6, we're introduced to a character named 'Meenah', a Pisces troll that haunts the dream bubbles floating between sessions. It is initially suspected, then later confirmed that she is the Post-Scratch version of the Condescension. And while obviously this still makes them two very different people, we still cannot deny that Meenah offers some insight into the powerfully enigmatic Condescension.
A very vast difference is that while the Condescension seems unwilling to give up her throne, Meenah seems hesitant to take hers into her own hands. Are they truly that different? Maybe not. Meenah's largest concern seems to be that she doesn't want the responsibility of caring for a kingdom. We can see this in some of the Condescension's actions. Rather than stay close to nurse her lusus and keep some form of responsibility for her people, she instead travels farther and farther to a point where the connection is entirely severed, leaving G'lybglob with no one to calm her as the Game goes on. And in her rule of the Alpha session, she is more concerned with imposing her laws than preserving the species she took control of, destroying her new kingdom with anathema, and little means to stop the decay. But, again, some of this seems to sprout from her clarified fears. Meenah herself shows that she would apparently rather die than have to face change.
But to some extent, Meenah's drive is her friends. She believes that by killing them, she's doing them a greater good. But is this where her and the Condescension deviate? Or does the Condesce somewhere, deep down, believe she is doing the same for her people? While that's a bit indefinite, we see a similar pattern with her and the Psiioniic. Despite his suffering, she prefers to extend his lifespan, keeping him with her, keeping him in his honorable service; a horrific blend of the sociopathic concern, and the justified selfishness.
Either way - The Condesce paints a bleak, twisted, and uncertain picture. Because her crimes may be unforgivable. But how easy is it to condemn one who seems to only act like a wounded animal? And we see in Meenah a picture of what might have been; but it's an excuse that can only cover up so much of the predatory Ruler's visage.
History: With such a long lifespan, The Condescension has overseen all. She was born at an indeterminate time at the beginning of the troll's timeline with most of the Ancestors. As the only Fuchsia blooded troll, she rules her part as the Empress, as is designated. Her part here is mostly speculation, though she predominantly ruled her Empire with an iron fist. She held pride over her position of power, and kept her interests in priority. Her manner of rule and interests clashed with the preachings of the Signless, making her somewhat distasteful of them, to make an understatement. Her disapproval led to the Signless' condemnation and eventual death, under the judgment of the Highbloods. She herself took control of one of his followers, forcing him to serve as pilot to her ship.
For the second part of the Troll's history, she was also present when the Summoner was born, enlisted in her armies. His rebellion directly confronted her, and led to some very direct influence on Troll Society and History on both their parts. With his ability to rally so much support among the Highbloods, the Condescension was put into an actual risk. Afterwards, she made the decision that adult trolls were not to remain on Alternia, instead to be dispersed amongst the Universe on her commands and wars, thus unable to unite against her. From her on, Alternia became the 'children's Universe' that the younger trolls were born into.
Being so far from home on her Battleship, The Condescension was wary of her loss of a connection with her lusus - leaving it in the care of her Descendant, Feferi Peixes. This left her at a disadvantage, if she were ever to return home, as it was Feferi's duty to eventually kill the Condesce and take her place in ruling. This situation was luckily - or unluckily, rather - avoided, as Sgrub was started, and Feferi's likewise abandonment to a dying Gl'ybglob left the monster uncontrolled, eventually causing her to utter her death throes, killing all surviving trolls. The Condescension at this point attempted to return home, but met with the lusus' final cry, killing her troops, her Pilot, and leaving her stranded in the wake of her Empire's destruction.
Arriving home, she was greeted strategically by the Handmaid, a servant to Lord English, with whom she made a pact - left with no other options, she agreed to serve Lord English. Her already timeless lifespan was elongated, and she was put into the Handmaid's place, in a situation in which she neither won, nor lost. From here, her Battleship moved from her dying Universe into that of the Alpha children.
Here, her situation becomes a bit more active to that of the plot. Coming in evidently with the Alpha's first Guardians, Jade and John, she takes a place in the timeline's shadows as the Batterwitch, raising Jade and John and passing down her inheritance of control over the Betty Crocker corporation. When Jade leaves, the name becomes solely that of John's, eventually passing the inheritance to Jane. When she is sure Jane cannot take that title - entering into the Medium - she emerges at last, putting a more definitive rule, dominating the human race. She puts control, forbidding procreation and rebellion in similar tricks as that she used against her Alternian Empire. She hires puppet officials to carry out her duties at a safe distance, dooming the entire Race. Her rule is eventually challenged by the Alpha counterparts of Dave Strider and Rose Lalonde, which succeeds in unveiling her and her schemes, and giving some hope - but eventually fails, as she kills them both.
From then on, the human race falls to extinction under her rule and constant attempts to subject it to her own ideas and methods, not made for humans. Her current role is to find the two humans she knows to be present, the last remaining batch of the Alpha sessions' players. She meanwhile rules on the throne of Derse, having overthrown it's Queen, and using her position to track down the kids.
Strengths/Weaknesses: As a troll, the Condescension has an increased strength, as well as durability and resistance to most things that would kill a normal human. Her position at the top of the Hemospectrum gives her a lifespan extending thousands of sweeps, calculating into more than twice the amount of years - that in itself has become even longer since making the deal to serve Lord English.
In terms of emotional weakness, the Condescension seems nigh-unbreakable, a cold, unfeeling dictator. She has cut herself from others and her people, in a society where it doesn't pay to trust. This in a way is a weakness - she does not react well in situations where she has to cooperate and trust. To do so in her natural environment can get you killed, and she would fear it. She is also distrustful of anyone that she views as below her - as the Empress, her largest weakness is her people, and the sheer numbers that overpower her. When she has now way to control them, then they are her weakness.
Abilities: Though her powers are still vague, there are a few known ones. She has the ability to commune with animals, controlling them, such as she has done with the Alpha session's First Guardian, GCat. She also has implied abilities of Mind Control, like Vriska, which only applies to trolls. With humans, the only effect it creates is to put them to sleep. Another ability is a mentioned one to elongate other's lifespans, which she has used on the Psiioniic/Helmsman to keep him alive for sweeps longer than he would normally, and continue piloting her battleship. All of these abilities I plan to cap, so unless a particular event came up to change that, she would have no access to them. Other than that, she has general abilities attributed to those from her canon - access to a fetch modus and strife specibus, allowing her to access items conveniently, and immediate access to her weapon, the 2x3DENT, a double-sided trident.
Relationships to Canon Characters: The Condescension carries an implied, unrequited relationship with the Helmsman, apparently favoring him to the point of making him suffer and elongating his torturous lifespan so that he could remain with her. As Lord English's servant, she also carries a relationship with him, to the point of fear and detestment. She is in the general distaste of the other Troll's Ancestors, though she herself may not think them worthy of mutual feeling. She is Feferi Peixes' Ancestor, and is seeking to kill her, so that her throne will not be usurped. Within the Alpha session, she carries a rivalry with Rose and Dave, and a fulfilled resentment against Jade, all of which she has killed. She seeks to kill Jane in the same way she does Feferi, and she wishes to eliminate the other Alpha children.
First Person: [This is not her Battleship - this is not her throne. This is nothing that she can familiarize herself with, as she steps back and forth upon the platform, taking glances round, trident raised in threatening gesture, teeth bared in aggravation and aggression. With a snarl, she launches the weapon to hit the ground a few feet away.
Well that did absolutely nothing to help.
As she walks over to retrieve the weapon, she kicks at the pocket watch, sending it spinning, turning on the video to catch her steps, her kneeling down to grab the weapon again. When she gets back up, it catches her voice, floating down to the watch in disdain.]
Reeks of humans... just when you think you've taken care of the worst of them... like plagues of vermin...
[A condescending, low, growling noise. She walks back towards the platform, still ignoring the watch, apparently attached to the idea of simply listening to her own voice.]
... Jack's assistance should clear up the problem. A pinch of intimidation, to keep them in line, until I reach him...
[She seems to stop to examine one of the posters - after which, she turns, to the thing she kicked earlier. Picking it up, fuchsia eyes bore into whomever may be watching the feed, fanged teeth bared in cold distaste, a scornful twist upwards in amusement.]
... and if I'm being asked so politely to make myself known...
Tell me, 'Ruby City' - a name befitting, I would think, of it's population - is there any that would come and greet me? I'm sure we could find much to discuss.
Third Person: The Condescension sat alone - by choice, by her own decisions. Her legs were crossed, her hands rested on the arms of her throne. And in her isolation, she considered. She watched over everything, considered every option. And alone, she was content. Alone, she could trust what was most important.
She had never felt the need to be assisted. There was a distinct difference between those that worked for you, and those that worked with you. She could, for example, bring up Jack Noir. A good, reliable worker. All the obedience of the Lower Bloods, mixed with the bloodlust of the Subjuggulators. And all of them, with one thing in common: they were not allies. They were not friends, or Advisors. She did not need them. She allowed them.
There was only one she had truly allowed. And if he was gone...
With not a change to her face, she shoved such thoughts away. They would not further her goals. She would work just fine, in this way. She could work by herself. She could forget everything but herself.
And it was all she would ever need.
